Year 1-Curriculum Letter Spring 2018

Year 1 Spring Term 1 Curriculum Information

Dear Parent/Carer,

We would like to thank you for your support so far this academic year. We are looking forward to working closely with you to help your child reach their potential. Below is some information about the curriculum we will be covering this half term.

English and reading

Your child will have 1:1 reading with an adult once a week on top of normal reading activities within lessons and books will be changed weekly. Please read with your child at home and sign their reading record. Our English focus will be Poetry adventure- Each peach pear plum, where we shall be looking at rhyming couplets and the children will be creating their own poems. We will also be looking at instructions and writing our own set instructions using time connectives e.g. First, Next, Then, After, Finally.

Phonics, handwriting and spellings

We will be continuing your child’s phonetic learning using Read, Write, Inc which all the children are now familiar with from their time in Foundation 2. We will be sending home support sheets to help you practice phonics at home. Your child will be learning their spellings through daily cursive handwriting practice. The words will also be sent home for extra practice so you can also help your child to learn and understand them.

We will be covering a variety of math’s skills such as numbers, shape and measures. Please continue to practice counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s to 100 with your child. We have had a big focus in the Autumn term on number writing, making sure the children are writing their numbers and addition and subtractions the correct way round. We will be continuing this into multiplication and division this term.

Topic and PSHCE

Seasonal Changes- We shall be looking at the four seasons and observing the changes we have seen so far in the year and predicting what will happen at different times in the year. Please use your walks to and from school to notice the physical changes you can see on your route. Myself and my relationships – We will be having a weekly session based on new beginnings and belonging.

PE and ICT

This half term the children will be having Team Games with Mr Smart. The children will learn ball skills and hand eye coordination skills alongside rules to a range of games. Please remember to have a PE kit (White t-shirt/black joggers/leggings/plimsols) in school for your child, ready for the Monday afternoon PE session. Your child will continue to learn a variety of computer skills while using laptops, iPads and other equipment.

We will be sending a homework book home with a selection of 9 activities in. Your child should pick at least 3 of these to do before the half term holiday. Please send the homework book into school daily for the weekly spellings sheet.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to speak to us in the morning, after school or by appointment.
